This pieced and embroidered Crazy Quilt was created by Emma Demarest Van Kirk (1869-1921) The quilt is constructed of silk, satin, and velvet. Marilyn VanKirk Mull lent us the quilt for our “Quilts: More Than Meets the Eye” exhibit that runs through July 27th 2025.
Crazy Quilts require closed examination. Unlike patchwork quilts they are often piece together without a defined geometric pattern. They are festooned with a variety of intricate embroidery stitches. The embroidery on the Van Kirk quilt contains the herringbone stitch, the fly stitch, and the feather stitch. The quilt has never been on display before.
